The Recyda evaluation tool was described as a helpful means of classifying the recyclability of packaging in a recent publication by the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT).

Recyda is a web-based platform that draws on the specifications listed in the minimum standards of the German Central Agency Packaging Register. According to Fraunhofer UMSICHT, the tool is not only useful for determining the recyclability of packaging but can also help packaging designers comply with packaging regulations.

Modelling International Standards

It is expected that new users will be able to input and digitally evaluate their own packaging projects after thirty to sixty minutes of training. The tool can differentiate between different packaging types, components and materials. The result is also compared with various (trans)national guidelines. Recyda can be used to model different sets of regulations governing recyclability and is to be continuously developed and fed with the latest data on country-specific recycling requirements.
