Organic adhesive saves energy
Henkel introduces new hotmelt adhesive for packaging
The Henkel Group has presented a bio-based hot-melt adhesive for the packaging industry that requires significantly lower processing temperatures. According to the company, the adhesive is suitable for folding cartons, trays and rigid wrapping and transport packaging, among other things. Technomelt Supra 079 Eco Cool has a bio-based content of at least 49 per cent. This is additionally combined with 30 per cent ISCC-certified and mass-balanced material. This makes it possible to correctly allocate the volume of certified and non-certified material to the product. At the same time, the application temperature can be reduced by up to 40 degrees. In addition to lower energy consumption, there are also benefits for employees: these include a lower risk of burns and reduced exposure of operating personnel to vapours and volatile substances.
Reduction of CO2 emissions
With the new hot melt adhesive, Henkel is supplementing its proven Technomelt series and at the same time offering an expanded portfolio of hot melt adhesives that have lower energy consumption thanks to lower application temperatures. By combining the technologies, companies can use the latest development to optimise the sustainability of their packaging at two points in the value chain - in the raw materials and in processing. According to Henkel, Technomelt Supra 079 Eco Cool enables companies to reduce their CO2 emissions by up to 32 per cent compared to a premium hotmelt. This corresponds to 7500 kilograms of CO2 per year with an adhesive consumption of seven tonnes. The adhesive is also compatible with the paper recycling process and has been certified for this by the cyclos-HTP institute.
Trend towards sustainable packaging
"With Technomelt Supra 079 Eco Cool, we are addressing several trends and challenges in the packaging industry," says Nele Gering, Sustainability Manager Europe at Henkel Consumer Goods Adhesives. Increasing regulations and consumer preferences for sustainable packaging practices and materials are increasing the pressure on companies to innovate sustainable packaging designs. "We are pleased to launch a product that is particularly suitable for responsible companies," says Gering.
