Microalgae as a New Resource
Shiseido Wants to Harness Them for Cosmetic Ingredients
Shiseido is investing in the development and production of ingredients based on microalgae. The manufacturer has entered into a strategic partnership with the Japanese biotechnology company Chitose, which is already working to build a sustainable microalgae-based industry as part of its Matsuri project. Shiseido is supporting this project with 1 billion yen. Microalgae use carbon dioxide to produce organic compounds such as proteins, fats or carbohydrates. They can be cultivated using land that is difficult to use for agriculture, for example in deserts or wastelands.
