Bye silicones, hello progress!

The cosnova brands essence and Catrice are free from volatile silicones

Sustainability has already become an important purchasing criterion in many areas of everyday life. The cosmetics industry is no exception. While this aspect was often only associated with high-priced products, brands in the lower price segment are now also following suit. With the elimination of volatile silicones from all products of the essence and Catrice brands since August 2024, cosnova has met the legal requirements before the specified deadlines.

Drawing consistent consequences

Since its foundation in 2001, cosnova has been offering cosmetics without animal testing. In 2023, all products are already free of microplastic particles and completely vegan. Saying goodbye to volatile silicones marks the next logical step. The decision to gradually ban all volatile, cyclic silicones from formulations was made back in 2020. Two years earlier, the volatile silicone decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) was placed by the EU on the list of banned substances.

Background knowledge for consumers

Over the past three years, cosnova has categorized 1,942 individual ingredients, described their properties in easy-to-understand language and made them available on the brands’ websites. In a second step, users can then go into detail and find out what the respective substance is and what function it has in the product. Details of the packageing material used have also been included.

What is sustainable?

In a representative survey, the company found that ingredients ranked fourth among the reasons why consumers choose a make-up product of cosnova. This aspect therefore plays a significant role alongside quality, price and tolerability. On the other hand, there is currently still a lack of knowledge. This is because 19 percent of respondents did not know how to recognize a sustainable product.
