Cosmetic preservatives prevent microbiological spoilage during storage and use, but when found in high percentage or are too strong, they might disrupt the fragile skin ecosystem. Moreover, other factors like pH, partitioning effects in Multi-Phase systems, surfactant effects, specific manufacturing process and protective packaging affect the antimicrobial protection. So how can manufactures produce skin-friendly cosmetics that are still able to overcome microbial contamination that might present a potential risk to the end user?
